The Global Reality of Child Labour

According to the latest joint global estimates published by the International Labour Organization and UNICEF, nearly 138 million children were involved in child labour in 2024. This represents approximately 7.8% of children worldwide. Among them, around 54 million children were engaged in hazardous work that could seriously harm their health, safety, development, or moral well-being. Although the global number of children in labour has decreased compared with 2020, the world remains far from achieving the goal of eliminating child labour. Children affected by child labour may be found working in: Agriculture and livestock Factories and workshops Brick kilns and mines Domestic households Markets, hotels, and roadside businesses Construction sites Informal waste collection Street vending and begging Many of these children work for long hours in unsafe conditions. Some receive very little payment, while others receive no payment at all. Their work may prevent them from attending school, damage their physical and emotional health, and expose them to exploitation, violence, and abuse. Children working in informal or hidden environments are often difficult for authorities and child-protection institutions to identify. Domestic workers, street children, agricultural labourers, and children working in small workshops may remain invisible to the systems responsible for protecting them. Child labour is not only an economic issue. It is a violation of a child’s right to education, safety, dignity, development, and a protected childhood. Ending it requires strong laws, effective enforcement, access to quality education, social protection for vulnerable families, fair employment opportunities for adults, and active community awareness.
